Use your retainers to keep your great new smile forever

You’ve worked hard for your new smile, and we want to keep your incredible results! A personalized retention program is essential for keeping your teeth from shifting back to their original positions. It takes 6-9 months for the bones and teeth to become “settled”, and a good retainer keeps everything straight and beautiful.

Why do I need a retainer?

Just as your teeth were able to move into their straight, optimal position, they can shift back if left unchecked. A retainer helps to hold everything in place even after your braces are removed or Invisalign® clear aligners are finished. You’ll be instructed to wear your retainer frequently for the first 6-9 months, and you can wear it only at night after that. Although you may not want to worry about a retainer, we strongly encourage you to use it as instructed so that your smile stays straight. Sometimes we will install a small permanent retainer behind your teeth so that you don’t have to worry about losing it.

Types of retainers

  • Invisalign® retainers are made from the same clear plastic as your straightening aligners. The retainer is made to match your straightened smile and sits comfortably to maintain the new shape of your teeth. Your orthodontist will give you instructions on how often to wear this retainer.
  • Fixed, permanent retainers are a thin wire that is installed to the back of your front teeth. These remain in place for life and provide strong support for your new smile. You might feel them with your teeth at first, but they are not visible to the outside eye and you’ll quickly forget they’re even there.
